Shareef O’Neal has always been interested in sports, and in his early years, he was attracted to skateboarding. However, he became interested in basketball in middle school and began training consistently when he was 13 years old.
During his freshman year at Windward High School in Los Angeles, he began playing forward for the school team. His inherent talent, as well as his ability to dunk the ball, helped him gain early attention.
Shareef played for UCLA in 2019, but he missed a significant portion of the season due to open-heart surgery he had in 2018. He only appeared in 13 games for the UCLA Bruins, averaging 2.2 points and 2.9 rebounds in roughly 10 minutes per game. He averaged 27.6 points and 17.3 rebounds per game during his final year at Crossroads High School.
